Today, we’re spotlighting Nick Chapman, Senior Manager of Data Science on our Client Analysis team, who has helped our clients maximize the value of Socure’s products while staying ahead of evolving fraud threats since 2020.

A Career Built On Curiosity & Impact

Nick’s journey into fraud prevention began early in his career at a similar company, where he worked as a fraud and business analyst — exploring transaction linkages and helping clients solve various types of fraud. But his path took a significant turn when he moved to the East Coast to work at Xfinity Mobile in Philadelphia.

“I was proactively identifying fraud rings in real time using graph databases,” Nick recalls.

“It was exciting work, but I kept thinking about a deeper challenge: how do you verify an identity during its very first interaction with a system?”

That question led him to pursue graduate studies at Villanova while continuing to work — a decision that rounded out both his professional experience and his data science expertise. Through connections from his previous roles, Nick was hired at Socure as a Data Scientist on the Client Analysis team under Rishabh Pande. He’s now a Senior Manager, leading efforts to optimize how clients use Socure’s products to reduce fraud losses while keeping friction low for legitimate users.

Every Day Brings a New Challenge

There’s no such thing as a typical day for Nick and his team. Their work involves optimizing Socure product usage for clients, building proof-of-concepts for prospective clients, providing feedback from the front lines back to product teams, and responding to fraud attacks and vendor outages as they emerge.

“The variety is what keeps me energized,” Nick explains.

“One day I might be deep in technical analysis, the next I’m collaborating with clients or our product teams. We’re constantly adapting to new threats and finding ways to help our clients stay ahead.”

This flexibility gives Nick a unique perspective on how all of Socure’s systems work together to support the mission of building trust in digital identity.

What Sets Socure Apart: Pace & Innovation

When Nick was exploring his next career move, two things struck him about Socure: the quality of the product, and the pace of innovation.

“The number of competitive products Socure has put in the market since I joined is astounding,” he says.

“That pace has continued to inspire and motivate me. Now, with the advent of LLMs, that innovation has increased in lockstep, and it has been a thrilling ride.”

What keeps him energized is not just the technology, but the people behind it.

“I’m grateful to the team that brought me on,” he reflects. “My own experience has been enriched at the same time.”

The Sophistication of Modern Fraud

One aspect of working in fraud prevention that continues to fascinate Nick is the variety of sophistication among fraudsters.

“There are some low-level attacks — simple cases of ID theft, synthetic identity fraud, obvious first-party fraud abuse,” he explains.

“But there are also more talented, career fraudsters who adapt with every change in technology, finding loopholes in current systems. They adapt as we adapt. They test as we test.”

This cat-and-mouse dynamic is what makes the work compelling.

“While new AI and LLM tools will aid us in our fight, they will just as easily equip the other side,” Nick notes.

“That’s why staying ahead requires constant innovation and vigilance.”

Proud Achievements: Developing Talent & Driving Impact

Over his time at Socure, Nick has contributed to many new deals and sales, helped battle persistent fraud attacks, and assisted on ongoing projects like refreshing models and creating new products. But what he’s most proud of is something more personal.

“The development of some of the data scientists that have joined our team has been the most rewarding,” he says.

“To see them grow and excel on our team and eventually move to other parts of Socure has been something I’m very proud of. Once they start to understand how all of the pieces work together, what the true mission is, they just take off. That is special.”

Problem-Solving at Scale

Working at Socure has sharpened Nick’s problem-solving skills in ways he didn’t anticipate. Given the complexity of the data and the problems the team tackles, he’s learned to approach challenges from multiple angles.

“I usually can come up with two or three ways to solve a single problem, each with their own benefits and drawbacks,” he explains.

“Over time, those solutions have surfaced faster and faster, and that has really benefited quick and informed decision-making.”

Success Through Relationships & Trust

When asked what success looks like to him, Nick’s answer reflects both his professional and personal philosophy.

“I think healthy, communicative relationships built on mutual respect and trust — personally and professionally — are a sign of success,” he says.

“Our CEO says it a lot to highlight an important element in software sales: people buy from people. Well, people also work with people, they live with people, they even raise new people. So clearly, our relationships with people are important.”

Looking Ahead

As fraud tactics continue to evolve and technology advances, Nick remains committed to Socure’s mission. His advice to new Socureans is simple but powerful:

“Curiosity never killed the cat. Not at Socure. Pull on every thread and try to understand the why.”

It’s this mindset — combined with his technical expertise, leadership, and dedication to developing others — that makes him an invaluable part of the Socure team. Whether he’s solving complex data challenges, mentoring the next generation of data scientists, or staying ahead of emerging fraud threats, Nick embodies the innovation and purpose that drive Socure forward.
